From Policy to Practice: ADUs in the Chicago Region
Overview
In recent years, Chicago and several neighboring municipalities have expanded opportunities to build new–and legalize existing–accessory dwelling units (ADUs). As a result, ADU development has accelerated in some communities.
However, barriers to construction remain. Restrictive zoning, supply-chain issues, construction costs, access to financing, and other issues have limited adoption. Additional resources are needed to unlock the full potential of ADUs.
On March 21, 2023 the Preservation Compact, Chicago Cityscape, CMAP, and Sightline Planning and Zoning partnered to present a lively, interactive morning of:
- Panels featuring experts on equitable ADU policy, design & construction, and financing;
- Conversations with property owners who have completed a diverse set of ADU projects; and
- Opportunities to shape the development of new resources to support equitable ADU expansion across the Chicago region.
Presentation slides are available for review below a and view photos from the event here. Thank you to all who attended!
