legacy projects
These legacy projects reflect foundational preservation work undertaken by The Preservation Compact in earlier phases of our organization. Through efforts such as coordinating 1–4 unit preservation initiatives and advancing building code reforms that reduced costs and removed barriers to reinvestment, the Compact helped stabilize vulnerable housing and shape more effective policy.

1-4 Unit Preservation
Following the foreclosure crisis, The Preservation Compact identified a critical financing gap preventing the revitalization of Cook County’s 1–4 unit rental housing and helped catalyze a new approach to redevelop vacant properties at scale.

Building Code
The Preservation Compact has helped modernize Chicago’s building, plumbing, and electrical codes—unlocking significant cost savings, streamlining rehab, and expanding material flexibility for residential and mixed-use properties.
