New NOAH Preservation Lab and NOAH Clearinghouse!

The Preservation Compact and the Institute for Housing Studies at DePaul University are excited to announce the release of the Preservation Lab’s second report, NOAH Risk Analysis, focused on the Naturally Occurring Affordable Housing (NOAH) stock in Chicago.

We are also launching the NOAH Clearinghouse, which compiles research and resources on NOAH preservation strategies from across the country. We welcome your feedback and input on additional resources for what we hope will be a useful new tool!

At the same time policymakers and housing stakeholders are starting to recognize the value of NOAH preservation, most view NOAH as a monolithic housing category. As a result, we lack a common understanding of different NOAH dynamics related to buildings, owners, and market contexts.

The NOAH Preservation Lab is bridging this gap with a number of activities, including:

  1. Releasing a report informed by a diverse Preservation Lab core team with general guiding principles for effective NOAH strategies tailored for different local conditions.
  2. Gathering NOAH preservation strategies from around the country into a NOAH Clearinghouse to categorize which strategies work best in different contexts.
  3. Hosting webinars and blogs in the coming months on these strategies and local market conditions to engage policymakers on new ways to support NOAH. Stay tuned for updates!

The Preservation Lab is a joint effort of The Preservation Compact and the Institute for Housing Studies at DePaul University. The mission of the Lab is to investigate preservation challenges by developing research and analysis, engaging stakeholders, and capturing discussion and conclusions in a policy brief.
