Protecting Consumers from Alternative Energy Suppliers

The passage of the Home Energy Affordability and Transparency (HEAT) Act will protect consumers from high priced alternative retail electric and gas suppliers, which falsely claim to offer cheaper energy rates than traditional utility companies.

One important aspect of the HEAT Act is to protect limited public energy assistance funds, such as Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), from being used to pay higher prices charged by alternative suppliers. The Citizens Utility Board has a detailed explanation of the consumer protections that owners can share with tenants.

Congratulations to our partners at the Illinois Attorney General’s Office for championing this effort.
