Single Room Occupancy (SRO) Resource Guide

Single Room Occupancy (SRO) Building Resources

The Preservation Compact works directly with property owners and managers of Single Room Occupancy (SRO) housing units. SROs are a critical, but often overlooked, element of the affordable housing landscape in Chicago. Below are resources to support the affordability and quality of this valuable housing stock.

In December 2014, the City of Chicago passed the Single-Room Occupancy Preservation Ordinance (Municipal Code Title 5, Chapter 5-15). The ordinance requires owners of SRO properties listed for sale to notify both the City and current residents, and it shares this information with affordable housing development organizations to give them an opportunity to pursue preservation investments.

Questions regarding SRO preservation and the SRO Preservation Ordinance can be directed to the City of Chicago at SROPreservation@cityofchicago.org
